Design a Game for Datel! Competition entries

Minesweeper DS

Fans of classic gaming will soon be able to play it on the move. Minesweeper DS has a pedigree going back to 1973, making it one of the oldest videogames around. It’s been released for numerous platforms since then, most famously as a giveaway with the Windows operating system.

The aim of the game is to clear a minefield, represented by a field of squares. Click on a square to search it – if it conceals a mine, you’re blown away. If it offers a number, that’s the quantity of mines present in the nine squares surrounding the one you picked. If there’s nothing there at all, the game automatically clears all adjacent squares, as they can’t possibly contain mines. The game is won when all squares that do not contain a mine are cleared.

The DS version of Minesweeper has been realised very well. The game plays out to an interesting music score, and you can change the background colour if you wish. Three skill levels are offered, as well as a custom arrangement whereby you set the number of rows, columns and bombs.
